How to use the Pantone Colour of the Year 2020

We hope that you loved our blog post last week on the history of Pantone’s Colour of the Year over the last twenty years. We really enjoyed browsing all the colours and thinking of ways we could use them in our interiors – so we thought what else could we do but put together a guide to using this year’s gorgeous colour in our homes!

Pantone described Classic Blue as timeless, a colour that “highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation from which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.” Blue has always been an extremely popular colour in home-decor, having been used in homewares throughout history, from Ancient Egyptian glazes and Bronze Age glass through to Chinese pottery in the Tang and Ming dynasties. The shade holds the potential to “inject creative confidence into interiors,” and can be “easily applied across so many different materials, textures and finishes.” It really is the perfect pick for a home. But how should we use it?

Add Pops of Colour

Classic Blue goes with everything – and that makes it easy to incorporate the shade into your space without it feeling oversaturated. Start by choosing a handful of blue accessories, and placing them strategically throughout your home. Blue pairs with basically every other colour – so you really can’t go wrong.

Need some inspiration? Some ways you can incorporate Classic Blue include using accent rugs, decorative vases, paintings and prints. To incorporate it into a living room or lounge, you could try bringing in flowers, pillows or throw rugs. For a bathroom, you could experiment with adding soaps, hand towels, or shower curtains in shades of blue.

Experiment with Lighting

Let’s think outside the box! At Tidmarsh we are at the cutting edge of technology, and that extends to smart lighting in our homes. Our smart home systems provide full control over home automation, which can include your full home lighting systems as well as our trademark blinds and window dressings. Lighting is just as important when it comes to creating an atmosphere. You could simply add blue lamp shades to add a soothing tone to your bathroom or bedroom, which would be perfect for relaxing and unwinding. Or you could go further and use blue light hues throughout your home, using smart colour bulbs controlled from a simple app on your phone, watch, or tablet, to fully commit to the shade.

Repurpose Furniture

There’s no need to spend lots of money to update your home with Classic Blue. A quick and thrifty way to approach using the new shade would be to upcycle something you already own using paint or modge-podge. A cheap tester pot in a calming shade of blue used on an old chest of drawers, shelf, or chair would bring a whole new life to the item as well as bringing the Colour of the Year to your home.

However you decide to bring Classic Blue into your home, from a bold feature wall to a simple throw, we know it’s going to look great.
