It has been unbelievably hot so far this Summer in the UK, and while the heatwave shows no signs of stopping, we’ve got a few tips for you on how to keep cool.
Up to 30% of unwanted heat enters your home through your windows, so blocking out the sunshine, especially when you’re out of the house, can help keep your home at a much more enjoyable temperature. The Department of Energy actually says that utilising window coverings effectively can reduce heat gain by up to a massive 77%! So what are you waiting for? Here are some top tips that’ll help you stay cool.
Bifolds add light and the feel of space, whilst also looking fabulous in a modern living space. However in this weather, the added sunlight may be contributing to the overall heat of the room; luckily, Tidmarsh has the solution. We offer blinds for Bi-Fold Doors in a wide range of colours, styles, texture, and weights – for all sorts of applications and purposes.
Whether you’re looking for perfect fit or pleated styles, our Bi-Fold Door blinds will give you added control over the temperature of your space. With an extra layer of insulation, we can actively trap the heat, ensuring that your room is comfortable all year round. Our blinds for bifold doors are available in both manual and powered functionalities, and can even be integrated with the industry-leading Lutron systems, giving you near-silent, effortless control over your blinds.
External Window Treatments
Exterior shutters and shades are the most effective Window Covering for reducing solar heat gain. Tidmarsh manufacture and supply a range of different options, bespoke for various situations.
At Tidmarsh we know that Awnings provide perfect shade to keep you cool on the hottest day. But did you also know that Window Awnings can reduce solar heat gain by up to 65% on South-facing windows, and 77% on West-facing windows? We have a wide range of Awnings available, in a variety of systems and with an extensive choice of fabrics, in various colours, finishes and designs. All of our Awnings are designed to block glare, reduce heat and provide protection from UV rays.
Chain Lath Blinds
Is the heat stopping you from spending time in your conservatory? Chain lath blinds provide attractive shading and efficient temperature control and are especially suitable for conservatories and greenhouses. Fitted externally, Chain lath blinds will provide in excess of 70% shading from outside the glass, which controls the heat inside to the same extent as 98% internal shading. The blinds create a cool and shady atmosphere by filtering sunlight during the summer or during the day, perfect for this unbelievably hot Summer!
Internal Window Treatments
One of the best tips for keeping rooms cool is by keeping blinds and windows closed in the morning, preventing the hot sunlight from entering the room. The most practical way to do this would be by fitting blinds or curtains that can block the light from coming in – and Tidmarsh have a wide range available for any space or function.
Lutron Triathlon Blinds
The most fashionable and affordable motorised blind system available, Triathlon Blinds are available from Tidmarsh in new roller blinds or insulating honeycomb blind styles. We offer a wide variety of beautiful colours, fabrics and textures to meet the functional and aesthetic needs of any space. The ultimate in affordable luxury, Triathlon Blinds can be raised or lowered at the touch of a button on your remote. In addition, all insulated honeycomb blind fabrics have a white backing that acts as a reflector, to help keep your space cool and comfortable.
Perfect Fit Roller Blinds
Perfect Fit is a remarkable innovation, whereby using a simple snap-fit operation, without the use of screws, the blind, in a perfect fit frame, is fitted neatly and without fuss into the window frame. We have an extensive range of roller blind cloths to choose from. To help with the Summer heat, many of the fabrics have SPC (solar protective coating) or ASC (advance solar control) coating on the reverse of the fabric, which allow for higher reflection of solar heat and light.
Does Blind Fit Matter?
Whatever blind you decide to buy, make sure that they’re fitted professionally and properly. For the blinds to actually keep the heat outside your rooms, they must fit your windows correctly. They should sit as close to the glass as possible, and overlap the window itself slightly. Any gaps will allow the heat to come in, reducing the efficiency all round.
For greater energy efficiency, we’d also recommend choosing blinds that are highly reflective on one side, for example, white, and heat absorbing, for example, a dark colour, on the other side. These blinds will be able to be reversed between Summer and Winter to either keep the rooms cool, or conserve the heat on chilly nights.

Short Term Tips for Staying Cool
- Turn off electrical appliances and gadgets if you’re not using them. Even a Television can generate a lot of heat, so stick to the essentials.
- Make the most of natural light and use energy efficient lighting when you can’t; our Lutron Homeworks system is a great example. Traditional bulbs will give off heat and contribute to the warmth of the room.
- Try not to use the oven – make the most of the weather and have a barbecue!
- Make like an Egyptian; if you’re struggling to sleep at night, dampen your top sheet to keep you cool through the night.
- Stay hydrated; make sure you’re drinking enough cool water to keep hydrated and regulate your internal cooling system.
