Pantone Colour of the Year 2020 from Tidmarsh

At Tidmarsh, we’re always trying to keep ahead of trends and keep up to date with style news – so we’re always really excited at the beginning of the year to find out the Pantone Colour of the Year. As the reference point for designers and stylists worldwide, colour experts at the Pantone Colour Institute take great weight in combing the world looking for new colour influences, from the entertainment industry to fashion, travel destinations and socio-economic conditions. This information is then used to produce the defining colour for the year ahead, the Colour of the Year.

The colour selected for 2020 is Classic Blue. As well as marking a new year, it’s the start of a new decade, and this colour – called comfortable and dependable – holds extra significance. A rich shade close to cobalt, somewhere between navy and royal blue, Classic Blue is “a timeless and enduring hue elegant in its simplicity“, according to Pantone and has been used in homewares through history, from Ancient Egyptian glazes and Bronze Age glass through to Tang and Ming dynasties Chinese pottery.

Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman has called the colour “we can always rely on“, which seems absolutely essential following the last few months of uncertainty throughout the globe. For us interior fans, it’s a win win situation – Classic Blue will make a strong statement on its own — for example as a bold feature wall — but it’s also a colour that will complement many other popular interior colours, for example shades of grey and white. Over the last decade, dark blues have been increasingly popular in house decorating; as we already know, blue is the perfect colour for a bedroom in particular, due to its calming and peaceful nature.

As technology continues to race ahead of the human ability to process it all, it is easy to understand why we gravitate to colors that are honest and offer the promise of protection. Non-aggressive and easily relatable, the trusted PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue lends itself to relaxed interaction. Associated with the return of another day, this universal favorite is comfortably embraced.

We’re big fans of blue at Tidmarsh, and can’t wait to see the impact that the Colour of the Year 2020 has on the interior landscape.
