The temperature is quickly dropping, and with snow on the cards for some of the UK this weekend, we need to make sure our homes are as warm and as comfortable as possible. Unfortunately, whacking the heating up means your heating and energy bills could be an unwelcome surprise. Did you know that – whether you use them externally or internally – blinds can save up to 25% of your home’s energy loss through windows? Who knew window coverings could have such an impact! Get yourself ready for the cold front and save a few pennies this winter with our energy saving handy tips.

Why Does My House Lose Heat?

Warm air enters and leaves your home by conduction through the walls, floor, roof and, most prevalently, the windows. It’s also transferred from homes by convection – through tiny gaps around doors and windows. A typical house loses 10% of its heat through the windows, but this can actually be as high as 25%. This is a massively contributing factor to heating and energy bills, and this is why it’s imperative to address and prevent this heating loss by using the most effective window coverings.

How Can Tidmarsh Blinds Save You Money?

Installing the right kind of blinds on your windows and doors will help the heat escaping from your home through conduction. A tight window dressing, like a blind, when installed properly can create an efficient barrier between the window and the inside air, effectively trapping the heat inside the room. Blinds act as an additional insulating layer at your window, helping stop cold draughts getting inside, while preventing the room’s heat from escaping outdoors. This means you can keep warmer using less energy – and costing less money.

What Sort Of Blind Should I Buy?

The most efficient way to retain heat through blinds is to choose a blind made from high quality, heavy and thick fabrics. These are better at conserving heat than lower quality blinds, so if you’re really interested in energy saving, we would recommend blinds made from our thick, blackout material. We highly recommend roller blinds and roman blinds in these materials to keep warm. For greater energy efficiency, we’d also recommend choosing blinds that are highly reflective on one side, e.g. white, and heat absorbing, e.g. dark coloured, on the other side. This will conserve heat as well as the fabric possibly can, and can be reversed with the seasons to keep rooms cool, too.

Does Blind Fit Matter to Insulation?

Whichever blind you decide to buy, make sure that they’re fitted professionally and properly. For the blinds to actually retain the heat inside your rooms, and therefore make an actual difference, they must fit your windows correctly. They should sit as close to the glass as possible, and overlap the window itself slightly. Any gaps will allow the heat to escape, reducing the efficiency all round.

How Should I Best Adjust My Blinds For Warmth?

Regardless of your type of blind, remember to adjust them as efficiently as possible for the time of year. Make sure to open your blinds fully in the morning to take advantage of winter sunshine, allowing your home to warm up naturally. As soon as the sun goes down, close them tightly to insulate your home and reduce the amount of heat that can escape.

Other Ways To Keep Warm

  • Make sure to take advantage of cosy furnishings for the wintertime! Thick carpets, rugs and soft cushions provide warmth and have insulating ability, to help raise the temperature of your home – as well as making you feel snuggled up and warm!
  • Invest in proper insulation for your home. This is a large initial purchase, but can save you a lot of money in energy bills in the long run. British Gas estimates that cavity wall insulation can save £160 a year, and loft insulation another £140!
  • If you have a draught coming in through your front or back door, draught excluders are a cheap and effective way of reducing this heat transfer, saving you money and keeping you cosy.
